Setting the Stage
There are few things in life that put people on edge more than surprises. As a gamer of nearly half a century—across tabletop, video games, board games, and cards—I’ve seen the full range of systems. From the delightfully simple mechanics built for house-party chaos to the eye-watering details of ship fuel tracking and passenger logistics, every system has its purpose. Each is tuned to a specific kind of player, a specific kind of night.
When it comes to tabletop RPGs, there’s a familiar comfort in light mechanics: clean rules, balanced systems, clear outcomes—all wrapped in an illusion of freedom. “Sure, you can do that… as long as you do it this way.”
I spent countless hours poring over rulebooks, pleading with GMs for just a little more flexibility—trying to craft a character I’d actually want to play for the long haul. My imagination was boundless, but the systems? Not so much. The limitations were baked in. The boundaries were already drawn.
That’s not to say rules aren’t important. Chaos is no way to run a game. The worlds we play in—no matter how fantastical—need some gravity. Magic, even superpowers, have to bend around something that feels real.
So with those memories in mind, I set out to create a different kind of system. One that invites creativity instead of confining it. A system designed from the ground up to remove needless restrictions, to guide rather than gate. A world where magic is overwhelming power through learning, combat is deadly quick, and becoming a true Legend isn’t just possible—it’s the point.
New players may find the system daunting at first. The flexibility, the options, the sheer possibility—there’s a lot to take in. But if you stick with it, if you give yourself time to explore and grow into the world, the rewards are more than worth the effort. Mastery isn’t handed out—it’s earned. And that makes the journey all the more satisfying.
Still, make no mistake—this system is built for intermediate to experienced players. For those who crave the freedom to bend tropes and test boundaries. For those who see deep mechanics not as barriers, but as inspiration. Where crunchy rules are a welcomed nuance, not an obstacle—an appetizer to the main course of storytelling.
I hope this system scratches an itch you didn’t know you had. That it opens up a new way of thinking about tabletop roleplaying—one that embraces imagination, rewards creativity, and invites you to explore the legend within.
Sincerely,
-Sterling
